21st to 22nd May

Woke up to a beautiful rainy day (maybe if I pretend to like it, it will go away). We drove up to the Sinclairs for Sunday lunch. Once again they spoiled us rotten and 'made' us feast on this enormous banquet! We caught up on lots of gossip and when we paused for breath, we ate some more. After lunch we decided to ignore the rain and Rodney took us out for a walk across the river and to the lock. No boats had ventured forth this time to stumble their way downstream and even the ducks were drying out their feathers elsewhere. It is so beautiful and green and just too pretty to miss on a trip to Wadenhoe, even when it rains. Graham inspected the garden and came back to discuss the plants with Patricia (which sounds like a lesson in Latin sometimes & now I know how the Greeks must feel when it is all ...er.. latin to them) and then we tried to figure out the dates that Rick and June would be there.
If Mom and Dad had been a few weeks earlier, they could have caught up with the Den Blaawens (for those of you who don't know, Father den Blaawen was given the difficult task of getting Rick to the Anglican church in Brakpan to get his (the Laudin) teenagers confirmed a long time ago. Dad used to pick the 07h00 service as it was the shortest and would then sleep/snore his way through the 30 minutes. However Father den Blaawen persisted as only the Dutch can and didn't seem to mind. I reckon he won a lot of bets around town as a result of getting the crazed local prokureur into the church.
Monday was Bonnie's last day here so she and Graham went off shopping and pottering around locally then they joined me in London after work for dinner and a show. We landed up going to see Mama Mia, and, dare I say it...I loved it!!! I thought it would be so uncool to say I loved an Abba show, but it was a happy, energy filled, nostalgic few hours. Bonnie and Graham also seemed to enjoy it. We had a good laugh, both at the show and the audience, but we all cringed a bit when the 'mature matrons' in the rows around us started standing up, clapping in time to the music and doing 'dancing queen waves'....eeeekkkk.
We found out later that one of the main characters was none other than Suanne Braun! I didn't recognise her on stage but when I checked the cast list on the web, I recognised her face and name. It was good to know that there was a South African in a job other than barman, dentist, doctor, teacher, IT person, Security Guard and train conductor in this country! We're branching out my chinas....
Well it is time for me to go to bed....lovely to fall asleep with the gentle pitter patter of raindrops muffling the sound of the university fireworks (how come they don't get washed out) and jumbos taking off above the house (and how come they can fly in this weather? Amazing considering our trains battle when it is raining, snowing, too hot and when there are leaves on the line). As you can see I am now a fully fledged pom so can whinge all I bl**dy well like.
Wait till you hear me start on those students who do wheelies in the car park above the house...and as for the cars that park on both sides of the street so that I have to hold my breath when I drive past them ...and the weather and the transport and the BBC and the whole world!!!
Oh I do love to whinge when the wain falls...I do love to live by the puddle-side....nighty-nite

20th May - Windsor Park

Saturday loomed (and gloomed, because...guess what...it was raining still....so hard to understand rain in a drought) & I had to work but Graham and Bonnie went off to Windsor Park to see the azaleas and/or rhododendrons in bloom. G says that they may have been just a little late but were still stunning. Look at these colours!!

Bronwyn blossoms amongst the blooming bulbs!

19th May 06 - Curry with Cobus and Wendy

We decided to try a new curry restaurant in Staines on the river, but after the rain we have been having for the last two weeks, everything is on the river! Ok so I exaggerate a bit but I am so tired of it already and feel guilty saying so since the UK is still in drought & apparently we need 6 months of continuous rain (in winter - nogal!) to replenish the water tables. Well, back to the curry, we had to wait a while for a table but took the opportunity to study the menu, eat poppadums and stare at other people.

11th May - The Ferry from Dover to Boulogne

The journey begins. We set off for France on Speedferries, which is a catamaran. We took advantage of the sun to sit on the deck and stare at other people whilst we pretended to admire the white cliffs of Dover. Bonnie is only here for two weeks so we thought the first weekend would be a trip to the Manoir and Paris.

11th May - Wood nymphs and trunk calls on the Authie

After arriving at the Manoir, Karen made us din-dins which we ate outside in the dimming light and then we went looking for otters but found only ourselves in the moonlight.

Of course Graham had to take a photo of each of us just to prove that there are no werewitches near the Manoir, (just sociopathic grannies but I'll leave that story for another time).

13th May Paris Misc

At Catherines Bistro...compare our clothing to the last time we were here in December with the Davies when it was sunny and freezing! We were all wrapped up quite differently then.

Bronywn and Graham in front of one of the Arc de Triomphe. Bronywn having her portrait sketched in Montmartre.
The crepes near Clichy served by a Tunisian.

13th May - Eiffel Tower & Seine

14th May - The 'Happy' Posers

The pictures that Hello magazine could not afford.

14th May 06 Versailles - The English Garden

By this stage, Bronwyn & I were tired and had given up fighting off the paparazzi.

14th May Versailles Palace & Singing Fountains

When we started out in the morning, there was hardly anyone there. This is the Fountain of Latona but looked like the body part extras from an alien vs predator movie. It was quite creepy. We wondered around the rest of the gardens only to get back to this fountain later....and things had changed. There were busloads of tourists that had arrived plus they had switched all the fountains on and were booming out classical music...all quite dramatic.

The Chateau

14 May - Picnic on the Seine

We left Versailles and followed the Seine westwards to the coast. We took some windy roads and turned off into what looked like a dead end (sorry I should be saying cul-de-sac and something but orange ducks..) and it turned out to be a picnic spot. We ate our grub before the muggies got to it and entertained ourselves watching fishermen drift by in their boat and watching a diving duck trying to do navy seal ops underwater in front of us. The butt end of the picnic.

Graham protects us from diving duck not canard.
We were trying to warm ourselves up on the car, it may be Spring but that doesn't mean it gets warmer.

14th May - Honfleur Vieux Basin (Old Dock)

The town. It used to be a defensive port in the 15th century. It reminded me of St Ives on the Cornwall caost. very pretty & arty... Bronwyn and I were fascinated by the egg whisks that the owner of this shop had hung from his ceiling! Never got pics of that though. The pap was too busy taking pics of us.
I think this is a great pic even if I say so myself.
Some of the many hunks of tin just lying about...waiting for the beautiful people.

14th May - Honfleur at the Lock

We went for a post dinner walk and watched a yacht passing through a lock. It was close to 22h00 so not sure where they were off to at that time of night. Of course there were still people walking their dogs to make sure that they left their poo all over the pavements instead of at home!

14th May - Nightlights of Dock Honfleur

Big boet and little sis!

15th May - Etretat & the Falaise d'Aval

We stopped at Etretat, a pretty little place on the Normany coast.
This part of the eroded cliff is called the Falaise d'Aval, compared by the author Guy de Maupassant to an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea.
Note the golf course on top of the elly's back.
We couldn't stay at ground level for long. The tour guide persuaded us to do some climbing. The view was worth it.
